"Imagine a string of Indian ponies, stretching perhaps nearly half a mile—some with packs on their backs, and some carrying the squaws and children; the men leading them or walking by their side. The squaws were dressed in red and other bright-coloured blankets—their babies either slung on their backs behind, or propped up on the saddle in front. The pack ponies were heavily laden with tents and clothes and camping utensils. Most of the women carried their husbands' guns slung on their shoulder, as well as the babies."
